Free Kindle Books - Reminders and recommended browsing 3/22/12

Kamis, 22 Maret 2012
A reminder posting every few weeks for those new (and even olde) to this site

I run a reminder every so often, as there are many new visitors each day here who've never seen some of the subsets available for searching and who wouldn't know about the several ongoing Amazon Kindle deals.

The picture used for this post is just symbolic of my discombobulation during a fun short vacation and in getting back in step with the world of e-books.

For anyone with time, the Kindle Community Forums are especially helpful, with Kindle owners willing to help and very knowledgeable, so that you can find an answer 24/7 quite often, worldwide.

Kindle-Edition subscribers of this blog, who get, on their Kindles, the most-recent 25 Kindleworld blog postings at any time, who've never visited the web page, might want to stop by briefly (Link: kindleworld.blogspot.com), to take a look at the right-hand column that holds earlier articles that can answer questions that many have had about any of the Kindle models, older or newer, plus info on how to make use of the many features not often described or publicized.  Thanks for visiting, either here, or via the Kindle edition, and for the helpful comments I get to blog items or in email.

A Free city travel guide from an interesting series of shorter travel guides
The Purple Passport to Los Angeles. by Rebecca Salois, Emily Brands, and Rachel Levin, is a free Kindle book release today (Friday), though I don't know if it's for one day or two.

Los Angeles isn't one of my own destinations in the near future, but the tips on visiting Hollywood look like fun.  The authors also have popular short guides with 'insider' tips to little-known places in London, by Jennifer Garcia-Alonso with Emily Brands (both are founders) and Rebecca Salois, and in Paris.  These are $0.99 each.

FREE AND LOW-COST KINDLE BOOKS IN GENERAL
If you'd like to browse for current free books (especially non-classics) or lower-cost offerings from Amazon that are available on an ongoing basis (although the books themselves go off-sale quite quickly) but which newer visitors will not have seen before, here's some light browsing:

Quick Note + Free Kindle Books - Reminders and recommended browsing

Senin, 23 Januari 2012
Just a quick note

Have been somewhat under the weather, but things are clearing up and I'll be back at it tomorrow morning.

I did take a little time to check out more closely the Wi-Drive and looked at what is needed for putting video on your Kindle Fire and also on the tiny Wi-Drive that can  smoothly stream video or display images and personal documents  to your Kindle Fire.  And of course it is very useful pocketable storage for images, documents, video, for transfer to the Kindle Fire as needed.  That the streaming or image and document access can be shared with two others is an unusual plus not possible with SD cards, though I'd like that feature too.

Kindle-Edition subscribers of this blog who've never visited the web page might want to come visit briefly (Link: kindleworld.blogspot.com), to take a look at the right-hand column that holds earlier articles that can answer questions that many have had about any of the Kindle models, older or newer, and info on how to make use of the many features not often described or publicized.  Thanks for visiting, either here, or via the Kindle edition, and for the helpful comments I get to blog items or in email.

Kindle Tip Reminder re Tiny Fonts on web pages with Kindle Fire or Kindle Touch

Selasa, 03 Januari 2012

READING FULL WEB PAGES WITH UNREADABLE TINY FONT ON A 6"-7" SCREEN

[This article has been replaced by the later article of February 5  Some changes were made recently that affected how text adjustments are made.]

SO, here's to a good 2012 to all -- definitely it was good to take time off from the usual to relax and celebrate and to have a calendar system that makes us feel we have a new start :-)
Welcome! to all the new Kindlers and visitors to this blog and Thanks to the regulars.

In the blog article with many general tips on using the Kindle Touch and Kindle Fire, I went into detail on dealing with web pages or with PDFs in which you can see the full page but which are usually unreadable in that format or screen width that is considerably smaller than our computer screens.

I've found that many news-site reviewers still don't know about a valuable Android feature that is crucial to enjoyment of web pages on small devices (this applies to Android smartphones also), and of course those just using a device like the Kindle Touch or Kindle Fire won't tend to know about them either.

So I'll focus on just this topic here, with all the new Kindle owners after the holidays and because those who did read the earlier article will probably find it difficult to remember where they may have read about tiny fonts on web pages and probably skipped the section anyway in an article that included many other tips.

While joining in discussions on the the Amazon Kindle Forums community where so many Kindle owners hang out to help other owners and get tips in return, I saw the following question and replied to it more briefly than I do in the blog article -- it's likely that a shorter answer can be more helpful, at least at first.

' Posted on Jan 1, 2012 10:00:01 AM PST
RE says:

[Q]: I like my Kindle, but can't figure out how to surf the web and be
able to read things.  Yahoo com is so small a magnifying glass is
needed to see it.  I know this is off subject, but can someone tell
me how they do it?

[A} in reply to an earlier post on Jan 1, 2012 8:11:12 PM PST
Arts&HistoryFan/Kindleworld says:
RE,
You can use an Android feature to pinch-zoom the font/text to a large size, to the point the paragraph of a column extends beyond the screen borders ... then double-tap the screen, and it will keep the large font while adjusting the text to the width of the screen and wrapping it appropriately.

SOMEtimes, the double-tap leads to the tiny version again, but if you double-tap once more, then it goes back up to the large font for text (which exceeded the boundaries you were at when you first double-tapped) but now adjusts the screen-wrap. It's called "re-flowing" the text and when it's done for a nicely large font, it is very nifty.

I explain this more at a blog article I wrote -- and some of the tips work for both the KTouch and the KFire.

http://kindleworld.blogspot.com/2011/12/kindle-tips-for-kindle-touch-and-kindle.html

- Andrys '

For considerably more detail, including other steps to take in Settings to make this work more reliably, do see the longer TIPS article.

Reminder: With both these units, but especially the Kindle Fire, a barely perceptible, very light press or tap will be more likely to activate touchscreen responses.

Added note to new Kindlers: Besides monitoring the Free Kindle Books guide with prepared search links to free Kindle books in more organized, smaller subsets:
be sure to check each day for Amazon's Kindle Daily Deal, which changes at midnight each day.  Unfortunately the Daily Deal is mostly U.S. for now.

Updates for KindleFire's Scrabble and Solitare apps, 976 more free books, unusual history special on Kindle Daily Deal today

Sabtu, 31 Desember 2011

SCRABBLE FOR KINDLE FIRE UPDATED TO ADD SINGLE-PLAYER MODE

There have been 280 customer reviews of Scrabble for Kindle Fire and a full 80 of them are rated only 1-star because Electronic Arts did not provide a single-player mode at first.  What were they thinking?

As of December 19, the single-player mode was added, and the latest reviews reflect this  (Link: amzn.to/kfscrabble ) and are very positive.  Since I used to be a Scrabble addict, this is bad news for me.  The updated Scrabble app is downloadable at no added charge, of course, for those who purchased it earlier.  (Link: amzn.to/kfscrabble-dl )  The price is $0.99.

Solitare v1.1.4 for Kindle Fire, by MobilityWare, has been updated for customizable designs and bug fixes, and is $0.00

Currently, Android apps are still U.S. only.

Unusual Kindle Daily Deal today - Three history books by Stephen Ambrose
As the Amazon editors say,
"Today only, three top-rated American history books from the inimitable historian Stephen E. Ambrose are just $1.99 each."  All were $9.99 Friday, have a discount of $8 each today (Saturday), and are then priced today at $1.99 each 80% off
Here are the details and links to each of the 3 books.  Two of them have hundreds of reviews and are ranked at 4.5 stars, and the third one has 65 reviews averaging 4.3.

The flood of free Kindle books continues
Friday morning, brought 356 more newly released temporarily-free books after Thursday's 294 books, and members of the forum in which Joyce and, sometimes AnnieB, announce these alerts, are trying to help filter them by posting the titles (and links) for the ones that most interested each of them from all those listed.
And now, Saturday morning, we have another 326 books! and already the forum members have listed some that stood out for them.

Discounted/Price-Dropped alerts on Kindle books
The latest, since I last linked to this message thread are from Dec 29 until today.

Happy 2012 to All!

New Free Kindle Books + Newly-Discounted Ones Found by Forumners + Amzn specials + Other discussions (8/8/11)

ONGOING FREE PLUS DISCOUNTED KINDLE BOOKS DISCOVERED BY FORUM MEMBERS

After today, the forum alerts for temporarily free books as well as discussions of newly discounted Kindle books will be on a separate page.

Amazon's own ongoing listing  - of LIMITED-TIME OFFERS Promos
Amazon sorts these by Bestsellers first.
I've added a separate sorting by Low-to-High pricing.

. What have been your favorite public domain books not so well known?
. Best "Free" books you've read (many are no longer free, however).
. Highly Recommended Books That I Didn't Like

ONGOING UPDATES
This blog entry regularly changes the forum-topic-links below, updating them to the most recent forum recommendations, especially since the message threads are often difficult to find.  The dates are in Red to make them easier to see.  These will be kept for about 3 weeks (unless they're reported to be no longer free or discounted) and then scroll off.

NOTABLE DISCOUNTED BOOKS
Am regularly pointing you, with this changing blog entry, to the latest messages on Kindle-customer recommendations for newly-found discounted Kindle books:
7/18-7/20, 7/20-7/21, 7/21-7/22, 7/23-7/25, 7/25-27, 7/27-29, 7/29-30, 7/31-8/2, 8/2-3, 8/4-6, 8/6-8, 8/8-9

8/3 - Publisher Harper Perennial: sale of 20 titles for $20, for August
      reported by Emily Bronte.
  8/2 - Macmillan's Kane & Abel series, $2.99 is a popular entry.
  7/25 - Amelia Peabody, now all $4.44
Many of the ones mentioned in June are still discounted.   While you're reading the message threads with links to the discounted Kindle books in them, Kindle customers will be adding new recommendations there for ones they've found while you're reading the thread.  I can check these daily and give a good starting point for the day.  It's been suggested (and I agree) that I remind people that on the first visit there they should go to Page 1 of the message thread (you can click on the number while there) and read the opening post by  RandomizeME, which includes
' This thread is NOT a book promotion thread for authors, or for people to post about indies. (And it's not for posting freebies either.) This thread is to post discounts and price drops that readers find for books from publishers." '
Amazon made a separate forum for "Meet Our Authors" where authors can talk with customers about their books.
Some here will just follow the discounted-books forum thread daily.

On a couple of posts there, I saw that people had seen a couple of books drop even further right after they bought them, partly due to people noting that the two were lower at B&N's sales, and Amazon has given (with no problem, they say) $credits on those further drops in that short time.

THE KINDLE COMMUNITY FORUM'S NEW-FREE-BOOKS RECOMMENDED BY OTHER CUSTOMERS
(Mainly contemporary books) - Main Finder: Happy Reader "Joyce"
These are almost daily, and I'll link you to these also, so you can quickly see the latest that other Kindle owners have found from various sources.  Will keep them here for about 3 weeks.

  Here are: July 19, July 19 - afternoon, July 19 - add'l, July 20, July 21, July 21 - afternoon, July 22, July 24, July 25, July 26, July 26 - afternoon, July 26 - late, July 27, July 27 - afternoon, July 28, July 28 - evening, July 29, July 29 - midmorning, July 29 - afternoon, July 30, July 31, Aug 1, Aug 1 - Evening, Aug 2, Aug 3, Aug 4, Aug 4 - afternoon, Aug 5, Aug 5 - Evening, Aug 5 - Very Late Evening, Aug 6, Aug 6 (later), Aug 7, Aug 7 - Evening, Aug 8, Aug 8 - evening.

Additional info for the dates above:
Customer "A" at the forum reminds everyone that the "Vook" series includes some "enhanced" books with video and says those are listed for iPads and iPhone apps and not for the Kindle e-reader, and they tend to have file sizes of 100-500 megs (an average regular Kindle book is less than 1 meg).
Luckily, some Vook books are regular and not "enhanced" books.

  Aug 8 - 8 books (a.m.), 19 books (evening)

The main (speedy) free-book finder is Happy Reader "Joyce", and she lists them each day and is the originator of that regular topic thread.
While you're reading the latest there, other customers and Joyce tend to find more that day.

ONGOING, NEW FREE KINDLE BOOKS - MANY TEMPORARILY FREE (mostly contemporary)
On the usual free Kindle books, the links in the box below will give you most of them with several sorting methods, and the listings are usually limited, to eliminate previews, chapters-only, and single short stories to save people time (although some of the lists linked to in the box will point to the most popular free Kindle books and you'll see some short-stories there), so they are doable when short on time.

Some of the free contemporary Kindle books are growing by 30 to 70 free books per day and it's not practical to list them all, and I must say, there are free ones which aren't of the highest potential as seen in the writing just for the product descriptions!), but you can see those books in lists via the links-box at the bottom of this and other blog articles here and can decide quickly -- with Amazon summary product info -- which might be worth trying.
