April's 100 Kindle Deals $1.99-$3.99 - Editors' Choices. Monday's free Kindle books. Why a CNet columnist returned his iPad for a Kindle Fire. G. Henle sale

Senin, 02 April 2012

APRIL 2012's 100 Kindle Deals, $1.99-$3.99

I highlight this feature at or near the beginning of the month for newcomers, and even oldcomers who don't know it exists.

These are Kindle books "hand-selected" by Amazon's Editors each month, and what you'll see on that special monthly-deals page are the new ones for April 2012.

As most are probably aware, Kindle books are easily readable, in color, on the Kindle Fire also, a hybrid tablet/e-reader with some Amazon bonus material.
On March 30, Rick Broida of CNET caused a brouhaha by writing, under 'Reviews,' a column about a personal decision: "Why I'm returning my new iPad and buying a Kindle Fire" - subtitled "Now that I've lived with both, I can safely say that I prefer a smaller, more affordable tablet."

You can imagine the reaction he got :-)  But I also have a really fine 10" tablet made by Samsung (from Woot! for $320) and, re that one, a commenter posted today, "Buy a Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1. We did a side by side comparison with the new iPad and could not see a difference."  One person asked if he had his eyes open.
But, I was using the Samsung last night, thinking how great it looked and wondering how much better the Retina display could be.  But as much as I love the 10" tablet, it's the Kindle Fire I use about 80-90% of the time.  And it IS the size. It's like choosing to pick up a paperback or a hardcover, I think.  And of course it's the KFire I take out with me and not the Samsung, though I used the latter for vacation with a bluetooth keyboard.

Others have pointed out that iPad 3 users should get the 32 GB model rather than the 16 GB one as the new pixel density produces far larger files, requires the bigger battery (which is why it runs pretty warm) and will use much more 3G/4G data meaning limits will be reached faster.

Another effect is that iPad and iPad 2 users will be using the same apps that will be upgraded to Retina with some downsides I don't remember, without the advantage of Retina display.  But definitely iPad 3 buyers should realize they'll need 32 GB now.  One story I was going to blog -- and I can look up the source later -- did a breakdown of the amounts of data the iPad 3 will use, relative to the iPad 2, and how quickly people's data plan limits will be used.  Since many Kindle owners also own iPads, it should be of interest for anyone planning to upgrade to the new iPad.

Today's sets of temporarily-free Kindle books selected and listed by Kindle forum members. April 2 books
As of 9am PDT, it's at about 248 newly free books but more people post their recommended selections later in the day.

Today's Kindle Daily Deal
As usual, a reminder that there's the ongoing Kindle Daily Deal ('Swarm'), Science Fiction, first book of B.V. Larson's 'Star Force Series' - 99c today.

Sheet music special - classical urtext editions
G. Henle urtext editions, sheet music - This will interest a few who tend to look for G. Henle editions, which are seldom found on sale.  They're imported and are considered the most accurate editions.  The sale has been going on since March 21 and ends April 10, and I've mentioned it only to piano groups, but it occurred to me that some Kindle-interested might want to know about it.

Kindle News: PCWorld - Why isn't the Kindle Fire global yet? Today's free Kindle books

Minggu, 01 April 2012

First, today's sets of temporarily-free Kindle books selected and listed by Kindle forum members. April 1 books (no joke)
As of this morning, it's already almost 300 newly free books.
And then there's the ongoing Kindle Daily Deal ('White Witch')

The Kindle Fire and global (non)availability
PCWorld's Jeff Bertolucci asks what many outside the U.S. have been asking: "If Amazon's tablet is so popular, why is it only available in the United States?"

They point out that the Kindle Touch 3G  E-Ink reader will be available on April 27 in 175 countries and territories, but nothing at all has been said about the Kindle Fire.

One thing many of us have thought of is a point made by Bertolucci -- Amazon's streaming video and audio and apps too have not been available outside the U.S. as there are complex geo-based digital rights involved and you'd wonder what the advantage would be for those in other countries.  He points out that it would be a Kindle Fire without Netflix, Hulu Plus, Pandora and Amazon Prime, or whatever international equivalents of those apps.

Amazon did invest heavily in the last 1.5 years in a popular video streaming outfit overseas seen as "the Netflix of Europe -- LoveFilm - See the earlier article on that.

IDC analyst Bob O'Donnell told PCWorld via email :
' My guess is that they don't have foreign-language video and music content deals lined up, and those are much more important for the Fire [than for the E-ink Kindle Touch].. There could be issues about localising apps as well.'

All that does make sense. "Localising" means adapting software for a specific region or language.

Bertolucci adds:
' Another possibility is that Amazon's cloud storage facilities aren't ready to handle millions of new global customers who want to store their digital content, including books, movies, music, and apps, on Amazon's servers. '

A recent Kindle forum thread is a discussion by a few Kindle owners who have managed to download (or upload to Amazon servers) 16,000 to 20,000 Kindle books each, due to the abundance of free books offered.

Their Kindles' Archived Items folders will of course have problems handling listing 16-20,000 titles, so they don't use the WiFi as much, but it appears that the Amazon ManageYourKindle page on the web is also affected by the data for that many Kindle books needing to be accessed for tabular listings of 20K books when they log on to try to find things in their Amazon libraries.

So Bertolucci probably has a good point there.

He also mentions that while the price of the Kindle Fire is seen as a good one here, global customers would probably pay much more, citing the Kindle Touch 3G pricing of £169 in the UK, $268 US equivalent.

Free Kindle Books and forum threads 3/31/12, going back 5 days

Sabtu, 31 Maret 2012
Links to Kindle forum threads about temporarily-free Kindle books released that day, for the last 6 days.

Rather than listing each book, these hold the offerings selected by avid readers for themselves out of about 400/day and may help those who don't have time to look at each title listed in the various temporarily-free catalogs on any particular day.

The forum threads by Joyce are no longer run by her, as she opted out, but others are following her template, and instead of one forum thread each time a batch of new free Kindle books is announced, there are two: one with discussions and one without (they call it 'without chat') so that people can breeze through these more quickly although Joyce's forum topic was especially enjoyed because of the community that had been built up there.  But now, people can access both, although it can be confusing.

First, I'll mention a couple of free Kindle books I just came across today because I was looking for something else to borrow in the Prime Lending Library (using the Amazon webpage Prime Kindle book browsing  [Tip: Select Low-to-High when doing a "Search" there for specific-genre books that are Prime-borrowable] when I noticed the two books below were on free-purchase status today in the search results I'd gotten.
[ Their free pricing has ended. ]

Notes on Photography, by Jim Dollar, released February 25, 2012.
The sample is ample :-) The photos are high resolution enough to be viewable full screen, which you can do by long-pressing on the photo and choosing 'zoom' -- and, with the Kindle Fire, you also pinch-zoom it to enlarge it and zoom in further for more detail.

The photos are of the intentionally intense-colors type, popular these days although I get more out of the ones which keep closer to nature's colors, but the vividness of over-saturated ones is probably more like the heightened emotions one might feel when viewing a landscape, or the strength of a memory.   I like the "Backyard" ones the best and enjoyed his apt descriptions (though repetitive) of the mindset of an incorrigible photo catcher.  And there are some very nice meditative ones.

Bound by Law?: Tales from the Public Domain, by James Boyle and Jennifer Jenkins, with Illustrator Keith Aoki, 8 customer reviews, 4.1 stars avg.

This introduction to copyright law is is in comic book format and DRM-free, to boot.
"“A knockout comic book about fair use and filmmaking. Bound by Law? riffs expertly on classic comic styles, from the Crypt Keeper to Mad Magazine, superheroes to Understanding Comics, and lays out a sparkling, witty, moving and informative story about how the eroded public domain has made documentary filmmaking into a minefield.” -- Cory Doctorow, co-editor of the blog BoingBoing.net

“This wonderful, funny, and clever comic makes a very complex issue simple. . . . I keep a copy in my desk.” -- Davis Guggenheim, Oscar-winning director of the documentary An Inconvenient Truth

Booklist's Esther Sinofsky writes that it's "an excellent introduction to copyright law.  The authors, all law professors, wanted to make copyright accessible for everyone in a form other than a law-review article..."

FREE KINDLE BOOKS - Amazon Kindle Community Forums
You can check the Kindle forum for 'free book' threads at any time to see the daily info as fast as it's posted there.)

Again, some are free for only a few hours, some for a day or 5, so

Double-check your selections for Price.

Watch out for the huge-number for any Prime's $0.00 price, which is for *borrowing* (via using the Kindle device only rather than a computer), but the $0.00 borrowing cost looks like a purchase price and is sized larger than the normal pricing, which of course has confused people.

Kindle News: Kindle Touch now GLOBAL.-No 3G models. U S WiFi-only Kindle Touch Now Special Offers only, at first. DETAILS on ordering + Situation on Special Order models and power adapters

Sabtu, 04 Februari 2012
This is the new but not yet announced page by Amazon for Kindle Touch International, now buyable by customers in countries outside the U.S. finally - for $139 U.S. from Amazon U.S.

This is for the Kindle Touch WiFi only, but on that page there is an international table that tells you whether your country is on the list for delivery of this model.

The internationaal page was discovered by the Canadian "Nathan" who is able to see the non-U.S. page(s).
g
Amazon has stores in France, Germany, Spain, and the UK and Kindle Touches can now be ordered there but ONLY from THEIR Amazon stores, which makes sense.

The main Kindle Touch page for international orders has adapters shown for other countries.

U.S. CUSTOMERS AND SPECIAL OFFERS MODELS
It seems U.S. customers CAN buy the normally-sold NON-Special-Order Kindle Touch WiFi-Only models this way, BUT if they want the specially-priced U.S. power adapter packed/shipped WITH the Kindle touch order, they need to buy the Kindle Touch from the U.S. Kindle store.  The US adapter, bought WITH the U.S. Kindle model carries a $5 savings, shown at checkout -- $9.99 instead of $14.99.

BEAR IN MIND that if you do buy the U.S. Kindle Special Offers model (which is the only way the U.S. WiFi-only model is sold now on the U.S. page), you have the option to UNSUBSCRIBE from the Special Offers option at any time by paying the DIFFERENCE between the cost of the Special Offer model ($99) and the NON-Special Orders Model now available directly only to non-U.S. countries -- that's a $40 difference.

U.S. customers can still buy the NON-Special Offers Kindle that includes 3G with WiFi.

Here is info and help on what Special-Offers models ARE as well as how to UNsubscribe from OR Subscribe to the Special Offers.

Of course, U.S. customers can also still just buy the U.S. power adapter separately, but it will cost an additional $5 when bought separately from the Kindle Touch.

THERE IS NO 3G KINDLE TOUCH PAGE SHOWING CURRENTLY FOR THOSE OUTSIDE THE U.S
Nathan in Canada could see this offer for Kindle Touch WiFi-only and as of this time, there is no page showing in Canada for the 3G/WiFi model.

Again, U.S. Customer pages now offer ONLY the Special Orders model
This was touched on above, but I want to make it clear, as it is a big change and indicative of a trend for the future.  One can directly buy the NON-Special Order models using the international page identified but the U.S. power adapter won't come with it, as explained above.

You *CAN UNSUBSCRIBE from the Special Orders though, probably before you get it, by going to the Manage Your Devices area where you'll see the column for that option.  Again here is info and help on unsubscribing or subscribing to the Special Offers feature.

Many actually like the special offers though, to their surprise. I'm one of them.  They're not only well done (I like the quality of the photography) but there are some quite good offers I've decided I'd rather not miss.  I was initially very resistant to this because I don't want to see even the small bottom line used for an ad, but it's very unobtrusive and doesn't move.
If they ever start animating them I would unsubscribe. Otherwise, they show only on the sleep-screen and never when you're reading.

Right now I've been using my Kindle Fire color tablet/reader more than my Touch, so I haven't been seeing them as much because the Kindle Fire doesn't have special offers.

3G OUTSIDE U.S.
The Kindle Touch WiFi-only now being offered to those outside the U.S. has NO 3G even for book downloads and Wikipedia, as the Kindle Touch model with 3G is currently U.S. ONLY.

Kindle Keyboard or Kindle 3G model
However, at this time, the older Kindle Keyboard (Kindle 3 with 3G) (UK: K3) still comes with FREE (but VERY SLOW) 3G web browsing where that is enabled.  The product page mentions that this older KEYBOARD and NON-TOUCH model is still buyable outside the U.S. -- and it has been sold in the U.K. for the last year also.

SUMMARY
This is fairly complicated as to exactly what kind of models and features are purchasable both in the U.S. and outside.
While the Special Offers models are the only ones directly buyable as of today on the U.S. pages, you can UNSUBSCRIBE from the Special Offers as explained and linked above, or you can buy directly from the International Kindle page(s) and get the U.S. power adapter for $5 more than you'd pay if ordering the Special Offers model from the U.S. page.

This may change somewhat, as no announcements have been made while we are seeing changed U.S. pages and Canadian Nathan has led us to the International page he sees outside the U.S. which contains a table of where the Kindle Touch can now be bought outside the U.S. finally.

Today's Update (12/21) to Free Kindle Books Guide, for free public-domain-only books + UK free books

Rabu, 21 Desember 2011
MORE FREE-BOOK LINKS

U.S.
I updated the Free Kindle Books Guide yesterday and today to now include prepared search links for CLASSICS OR PUBLIC-DOMAIN ONLY - separating them from the 33,000 free books, with only about 3,000 being non-classics and non-public-domain.

As with the others, the free public-domain books include sorting by Bestselling, High-to-Low Ratings, and Publication Date.
The latter sort-choice, to find the latest ones released, can be interesting, as it includes later books or documents that are offered to the public by government or informational organizations.

As of today, 12/20/2011, there are over 29,000 Classics and Public Domain offerings.  Currently showing at the top of this list are some definitely esoteric titles released a day ago.

. The Ancient Phonetic Alphabet of Yucatan by Daniel Garrison Brinton, Dec 20, 2011
. The Arabian Art of Taming and Training Wild & Vicious Horses by P. R. Kincaid and John J. Stutzman, Dec. 20, 2011
. Artistic Anatomy of Animals by Édouard Cuy, Dec. 20, 2011
. Bakhchisaraiskii fontan. English by Gavrila Romanovich Derzhavin and Aleksandr Sergeevich Pushkin, Dec. 20, 2011
. Boy Scouts: Tenderfoot Squad or, Camping at Raccoon Lodge by Alan Douglas, Dec 20, 2011
. By Desert Ways to Baghdad by Louisa Jebb, Dec 20, 2011
  . The Chevalier d'Auriac by S. (Sidney) Levett-Yeats, Dec. 20, 2011
. The Children's Hour, Volume 3 (of 10) Stories from the Classics by Eva March Tappan, Dec. 20, 2011

I also updated information on Feedbooks.com

U.K.
I've adjusted the Free non-classics, non-public-domain links to the new system:

Hoping a few will find some of these worth exploring.

Free Kindle Books page: Low-Cost also. Revised. VERSION 4a - Dec. 19-21, 2011 Update

Update - 12/15/11 - Amazon has changed the coding of the display of Kindle books -- types and sorting methods -- so I am changing the various links.

UPDATES for Dec. 20-21 include adding links for Classics + Public Domain ONLY, as they include latest governmental and organizational information books and documents, and some of the latter are intriguing.  Also updated Feedbooks info.

UPDATE Dec. 19, 2011 to change all links and add some
First notification Dec. 15 was not complete and it's ready now (US books).  Please Let me know of any errors in the links.

The Interim post said: Here are the latest correct links for current free non-classics, for the last two months, and then by various sorts for all free non-classics.

Nov 2011,  Dec 2011 (re-done)
Also, all currently free non-classics sorted by:
   Publication Date   Bestselling    High ratings

Adding, for interim alert, Highly rated, under $1

And, of course, here's the Kindle Daily Deal, which changes shortly after midnight each day.

Amazon Top 100   (Also, UK-only)  along with Amazon's own Limited Time Free Promos.

ALL REVISED LINKS FOR FREE KINDLE BOOKS PAGE ARE BELOW
The various links below are now revised to work with the new coding, Monday the 19th  In the meantime, the information on free book sources remains accurate. The UK links at the end still need revising though.

This long-standing blog entry, Free Kindle Books (begun in 2009), was revised April 10, 2011 to remove most of the chronological changes made over the last two years as it became too confusing to read.

It was also updated again soon after that for the many changes to the free and low-cost Kindle books area at Amazon.  Besides the 33,000+  free, complete books (only the ones in English),  there are links to find Kindle books that are $0.99, $1.99, and $2.99, as a lot of authors are publishing in that price-range and they're not easy to find.  Some are books by indie authors and others  are popular books for which the price has been dropped by Big6 publishers after a couple of years or when they want to introduce new readers to authors who have

UPDATE-2:  NOTE that as of Nov. 2011, Amazon Prime customers can borrow one book per month from a selection of 5,000+  (Link: amzn.to/kprimebooks) which includes over 100+ New York Times Bestsellers, with no due-dates and no waiting lists.

And as of September 21, 2011, Amazon Kindle customers can borrow Kindle books from 11,000+ public libraries in the U.S.
 [ End of Update-2, added Nov. 10, 2011.]

Find Free Kindle books plus Lower-Cost Kindle Books
Click here first for most recently published NON-classics under $1 or try that list sorted by bestselling.  There are more new temporarily-free books or discount-promos on most days, but also prices do change back, so check them regularly.

UPDATE-1:  NOTE that the Amazon book promos tend to be temporary and when the price goes back up, Amazon updates the product page $-amounts faster than they update the pricing amounts for the database used for the Amazon searches.  You'll note that they're in flux often, so ignore the few that are higher than $0.99 the search-value.

To limit your search to Only the FREE non-classics, check directly below:

This resource contains prepared links that you can click on, at any time, to find, for example, the most recently published free non-classics,  or  you can choose to see these according to bestselling or highest rated ones as they appear, on a daily basis or more.

These are usually temporarily free, on a short promotional basis, and a click will show you the latest ones, although Amazon displays free books on various listings and they don't all show up any one list

On your computer's web-browser, you can of course bookmark this page to get here more easily.  The short URL is http://bit.ly/kfreelow3.

Chapter, Excerpts and Previews
Since most Kindle owners seem interested in complete books, I'll try later to again avoid search results for books which offer only certain chapters, excerpts and which are, essentially, previews.   You can see the previews, in any event when you go to the Amazon Kindle book pages, as they're not hard to find.
I'll test these more before giving links to Kindle book lists that show no Chapters or Previews or Excerpts, with the downside that titles of full books which include one of these words won't be on these lists.
But later on this particular set

Free Kindle-Compatible books at Non-Amazon  websites
This guide to Free and Low-cost Books page also includes links to most of the other (non-Amazon) Web site that have a strong offering of free Kindle-compatible books, many of which are directly downloadable to your Kindle at no added cost.  Let me know about good (legal) ones I haven't included.

Important advantages to downloading Kindle versions of free books
Bear in mind that when you download free Kindle books from Amazon, they can be
  1.  Sync'd with your other Kindle-compatible devices and
  2.  Included in your private-password protected Annotations webpage on Amazon servers,
which can be accessed at kindle.amazon.com

Kindle Edition blog-subscribers
Subscribers to the Kindle blog-edition have found that when following blog-links to a book or other Amazon product, the Kindle Edition is not always enabled to make clickable orders through the Kindle-version of the Kindle Store.

.  So I recommend a drop-in to the webpage when you feel like checking the latest published free nonclassics and best-selling free nonclassics -- as these can change in a couple of hours and there are about 6 pages of them at any given time.

Another Amazon Change - "Relevance," which I've called "LateListed."
It shows up now only in certain circumstances and sometimes is called 'default' so I'm ignoring it at this point.
"By Relevance" ('default') or Late-listed ebooks tended to include books that were published some years ago but which were recently added to the temporarily-free non-classic Kindle book listings.   "By Publication Date"-lists would show these books, published some years ago, lower down in the listings when sorting by more-recently published, at the top.  I'll watch what they're doing it with it these days and see if I can make sense of it.

With the links below you can  quickly see only the small selection of currently-free contemporary Kindle books sorted also by Publication Date, Bestsellers (linked just above) or by the Average Customer-Rating, as that's made easier with the prepared links on this page.

Each Kindle Edition blog has the last 25 blog articles, searchable on the Kindle so that you can find items of interest more easily within the 25 articles while offline.  I think many will find it useful despite my penchant for giving source-links for data.  I try to include enough info from the news sources so that Kindle Edition blog-subscribers for A Kindle World don't have to click links to get the main points.

Again, a few newer books are promotional and free for only a while.  Sometimes for only a couple of days.

So it's a good idea to bookmark this page, in addition to other resources you use, to check out, when you're able, what might be new to you, with the ready-links to categories of available free or very low cost books.

SUMMING UP:
MAIN FREE KINDLE BOOK SEARCH LINKS
1.  INCLUDING CLASSICS & PUBLIC DOMAIN (12/19/11)
Amazon's now almost 33,000+ free books (complete and in English), sorted by:
Bestselling or by Highest Rated   or by Publication Date
These include both the classics and non-classic books.

UPDATE 12/20-21 to include Public Domain (Classics included) titles ONLY
2.  CLASSICS & PUBLIC DOMAIN ONLY
The Public Domain ones include later books or documents that are offered to the public by government or informational organizations.

4.  The Project Gutenberg e-books catalog (MOBI editions) for Kindles.  You can browse or search the catalog on your Kindle and click on one to have it downloaded to your Kindle from the site.
There are no Amazon charges on a download from the Project Gutenberg site.

5.  A humongous Amazon Forum thread on a million or so books readable on the Kindle - How to get them (mostly free).

6.  How to convert, in 2-3 minutes, any of Google's half million free books.  They are available in ePub format.  But you can now download instead the PDF versions although the re-flowed text of ePub and Kindle-Mobi books may be easier to read than original layout PDFs.

OTHER SEARCHES
I need to add these days that some international Kindle users in Europe and some other countries are in high wireless-cost areas, so Amazon charges about $2 more in some countries for the otherwise free book.  They've removed the additional charge in a few countries though.

FREE CLASSICS AND PUBLIC DOMAIN BOOKS AVAILABLE ELSEWHERE
For these Amazon customers and any Kindle owners interested in finding mostly free, direct-to-Kindle e-books at other sites -- these sites can download direct to a Kindle, at no cost:
You can also download to your Kindle or computer, for later transfer to your Kindle, free "mobi" or "prc" format books from feedbooks.com, manybooks.net, fictionwise.com, and as I've often mentioned, any of 30,000 well-formatted books from the Project Gutenberg set.

Recommended also are the 2.5 million+ free Internet Archive books and documents plus other offerings from the January 24, 2010 blog article.
The Internet Archive folks are responsible for Open Library -- "Open Library is an open, editable library catalog, building towards a web page for every book ever published."

Mobileread Forum books makes very well-proofed e-books.  This links to their listing of e-books, sorted by Amazon-readable 'PRC' format and by most recent first.  These tend to be very well formatted, with linked table-of-contents page when applicable, and mostly free.  Some of their ebooks are sold at Amazon and I think more of them will use the self-publishing feature of Amazon in the future.

Baen.com.   Baen's Free Library offers science-fiction in ".prc" (MOBI) format, which is essentially the Kindle format without rights-protection.  While Baen's e-books might not be directly downloaded to the Kindle  (they offer you the choice to email their e-books to your Kindle instead) -- and if you get a book that way, it incurs costs of about 15c per megabyte of a file.  Books that are mainly text seldom are more than a megabyte so the cost would be 15c).

But you can choose to, instead, download Baen's e-books to the computer and transfer them via USB cable to the Kindle's "documents" folder (or use the USB cable to attach the Kindle to your computer and download direct to the Kindle's "documents" folder.  Here's their Guide to doing that.
Baen.com also sells non-rights-protected commercial offerings (in addition to offering free classics) in that format.

NOTE: Again, Kindles with 3G Cellular wireless or using WiFi networks CAN download books direct-to-Kindle from several book stores (see above) using the Kindle web-browser.

If wondering what the differences are between the '3G' and 'WiFi' capabilities, a short blog article here may help.

FURTHER UPDATE 12/20-21, 2011
Feedbooks Dedicated Kindle Guide
Commenter Tom Semple pointed out that Feedbooks.com discontinued the Kindle Guide but has instructions for downloading the Kindle-compatible editions as well as a link for downloading them direct to the Kindle. [End of Update]

Mobile Device-Optimized Pages
For those who can and do use the wireless feature to look up information on the Net, there are links to the mobile-device-optimized versions of the webpages for feedbooks.com and manybooks.net.
The Kindle can access these two sites more easily using these links::
    (1) feedbooks.com-mobile: http://www.feedbooks.com/?format=mobile and
    (2) manybooks.net: http://mnybks.net.

Some of you might want to use the free, downloadable 'book' file I put together which is made up of mobile-device-friendly links to various popular websites and which explains some workarounds for problems that might be encountered using webpages such as the one for gmail.

AMAZON'S Free Book Collections webpage
As of March 2, 2010, Amazon added a new page with pointers to Free Book Collections on the Net, all of which are included here. This ongoing blog article includes other large, Kindle-compatible book sources as well and has pointers to and links for such things as how to get the Project Gutenberg books on your Kindle directly, without needing to use a computer vs the method described at Amazon's page.

That new Amazon page also includes a link to its own Amazon Free Classics listing. There are over 15,500 free classics at Amazon.  Again, annotations made on these Classics can be kept on your private, password-protected webpage on the Amazon servers, and you can sync Amazon books between your Kindle-compatible devices, including smart phones, tablets, and with free apps for them and for your PC or Mac.

NOT FREE
For those interested in an easier-to-remember shortcut to Amazon's current 100 Bestsellers (the majority seem to be free but there are regular-priced ones in the list as well), try http://bit.ly/kbsellers.

Here's a search some have requested on the forums -- non-classics under $10, for a time when the Big6 publishers (with Apple iBookstore as driving force) have successfully pushed Amazon to the "Agency" model and to prices too often from $13 to $15 for newer books.

That lists contemporary Kindle books priced from $3.00 through $9.99, and sorts by bestselling books, with most popular books first, as Kindle owners on forums have wanted to be able to easily find e-books that are priced below $10.
These start at $3 because $0 to $2.99 range is already covered above.
When at the page results, you can sort by low-to-high or high-to low also, using the options in the top, right-hand corner.

Also, a popular item for browsing has been the Bestsellers in Kindle books for 2009.   This was first noted in the blog entry for Amazon's Best of 2009.
Later added Bestsellers in Kindle books for 2010.
And here's Bestsellers in Kindle books for 2011 so far (Dec. 19 Update).

*NON*-KINDLE - These are paper books, but the 40% discounts should be noted.
As of March 3, 2010, Amazon has created a new page that highlights what they consider "the best new books" to read every month.  These feature "editors' picks" and "reviews of the best new reads in fiction, nonfiction, and books for young readers, available at 40% off all month long."  The new page is titled Amazon's Best Books of the Month Store.
Again, these are *NOT* Kindle books, but some books are not in Kindle format and some readers don't have Kindles, yet :-)

Free Kindle Books - NON-public domain - Revised links, Adding, under $1

Kamis, 15 Desember 2011
Update - 12/15/11 - Amazon has changed the coding of the Amazon-US page listings of Kindle books -- types and sorting methods -- so I've been changing the various ongoing links. I'll probably need to change the UK ones also.

I just discovered the changes today, since the links had been working the last time I checked about a month ago.  Until I can re-do and test all of the varied links for the ongoing free-e-books guide, here are the latest correct links for currently Free non-classics for just the last two months, and then by various sorts for all currently free non-classics.

Nov 2011,  Dec 2011
Also, all currently free non-classics sorted by:
   Publication Date   Bestselling    High ratings

   Added Highly rated, under $1

Amazon Top 100   (Also, UK-only)  along with Amazon's own Limited Time Free Promos.

Although Kindle Edition subscribers can actually click through the links, Amazon's pages are not that easy to read on a Kindle athough it's doable.  I'd visit the website (Link: kindleworld.blogspot.com ) now and then to use the links that are always in the reference column at the right and near the top.

Postponed the videoclip + other recommendations until Friday afternoon due to handling some birthday time Thursday.

Free Kindle books: Mon: 279 books, Sun: 299, Sat: 6, Fri: 680 ! + Free parental control app for Kindle Fire - UPDATE 12/13

Senin, 12 Desember 2011

TOO MANY free Kindle books, even for the Kindle forum free-book stalwarts

Never thought we'd see this situation.
As you know, I haven't been around much, but things are calming down so I can get back to more regular blogging.  The first thing I find is that Joyce has posted, Sunday:
' Good morning to all ... Well, here we go again with another round of 299 freebies. I'm sorry, but I will need to pass this off to your search one more time. '

Then Joyce refers readers to one of the many good sites she visits to collect her daily specimens (there are several sites recommended in these threads I've pointed to you a few times a week).  The site she recommends for searches (kinlib) has a few per page with good information though not the quickest if people are in a hurry.
And they give advice for using it, when people feel it's laborious, and name other sites.  Another good site they recommend removes free books whose price have been raised back. (ereaderiq)

The responses from the forum readers include naming the free books they felt were interesting enough to 'buy' (for $0.00), so I'll post some of these instead and -- as always -- am referring you to Joyce's ongoing daily forum threads so you can get all the forum alerts and links to finder-places 'first-hand' -- the forum message titles and threads are separate for each set of release-alerts and are otherwise hard to find unless you are right there in the forum to find and follow them.

They tend to list on a regular basis which website sources they use so that you can find, bookmark, and regularly use them.

Sample reactions to the glut:
  "Oh no, not again!
"Sometimes too much is simply too much!  Fortunately I am on vacation right now.
"

Amazon now lets self-publishers set promo pricing of $0.00
The likely reason for this unmanageable glut of free books is that Amazon has finally allowed Amazon-self-published writers who agree to offer their books for the Prime Lending Program (which allows members to borrow one free book per month with no waiting list and no due-date) the ability to set their prices to $0.00 instead of just under $1.
And they can do this once (per year, I think per 90 days.
Update - 12/13 - Those interested in this aspect can read how that works, in an article by Mark Coker of Smashwords (Link: huff.to/prime-indies ), whose site is one of those that are negatively affected by the Prime terms for Indy authors.  Unfortunately too many of them decided to do it the first week, and while the idea of briefly pricing their books at $0.00 is to let people find those books, this will be difficult this week.

Add that the authors' books can be included in the monthly Prime borrowing program, with the added exposure, if they pull those titles from competitor sites where they do make some money.  In other reading (Nate Hoffelder's The Digital Reader (Link: bit.ly/prime-indy ), I see that one author (Jeff Bennington) said that Amazon had brought him 97% of his e-book sales, so it was an easy decision for him.

All in all, I don't think most knew that they would be going into a pool of 46,000+ books instead of the original 5,400~ or so when the program started with traditionally published books and invited best-selling authors publishing at Amazon.

Unless Amazon separates the new Indies books, it could make it harder for Prime members to find what we usually look for in the public libraries that are always on waiting lists.  I hope there's flexibility for the writers who signed up for this and that they are doing this on a trial basis (see Coker article linked in this section).

When I first explained the new Prime Kindle book borrowing program (Amazon calls it the Lending program), I gave a special link to a browsable webpage listing of of the then 5,379~ Prime-eligible Kindle books (Link: amzn.to/kprimebooks ).

Today, that link will bring you to over 46,000 Kindle books eligible for Prime program borrowing.   That matches our situation of 1,200+ free books the last few days.

Parental Control app available for Kindle Fire
In connection with some concern over the readily visible product pages for blue books (and I don't mean automobile), there is a very general free app available now for parental control of what can be accessed with the Kindle Fire.
Here's the Amazon Kindle forum discussion of how the app works, its benefits and limitations.

Today's Kindle Daily Deal
Monday's Daily Deal is a Bellwether Prize-winning novel, Mudbound, by Hillary Jordan set in the Jim Crow South and is discounted from $8.51 to $0.99 (88% off) for one day.

The 1200-1500+ free books listed and discussed in message threads and a LOT of customer recommendations for those not wanting to plow through the listings is next.

These will be on a 2nd page (if you are reading on the main page), as the long lists are linked to from the main page.

MORE... ( The temporarily newly-free books on the 2nd page, off the main page)
Those wanting to go see the discussion threads on these and some user recommendations reprinted here from the forum can do so by: clicking on "MORE" just below (if you're on the main web page).

Lost Gold of the Shenandoah
A lighthearted tale of mystery and adventure set against the historical legacy of the American Civil War.

In the Autumn of 1864, a Confederate payroll train out of Richmond, Virginia, is attacked and plundered by a Union raiding party near Waynesboro, Virginia. The successful band of raiders, with their booty of strongboxes full of gold coins, headed north toward the Union lines near Winchester, Virginia. They never made it back.

One hundred forty-six years later, this tale of the lost gold is regarded only as legend, except in the small Shenandoah Valley town of Apple Grove. The descendants of the town's founding families, the Sons and Daughters of the Stars and Bars, have never stopped looking for the gold. But the trail of clues to its whereabouts has long grown cold, until the summer of 2010.

Lauren Reynolds had recently moved to Apple Grove and purchased the old White Swan Inn. She loved the town's old houses and battlefield park, the working period steam locomotive, and the numerous shops that catered to tourists and Civil War enthusiasts. It was a town where Civil War Reenactors came each year to relive the romance of times gone by. But when Lauren accidently stumbles across hidden secrets from the inn's past, she discovers that there is a darker side to this picturesque Shenandoah Valley town.

A Raucous Time (The Celtic Cousins' Adventures)
"When the final tally is counted, it will be seen that John's vices far outweigh the virtues of other kings," Churchill meant the Magna Carta of course. John also left another legacy though. One which has been hidden from sight for almost one thousand years. Rhyllann Jones's geeky cousin Wren believes he can solve an ancient mystery. And he's willing to sacrifice everything to the race to discover the fabled treasure trove of King John.

Rhyllann Jones longs for a normal family life. His Mum is an animal activist, his gran is in hospital, his aunt is in prison, while his cousin insists he knows where King John's lost treasure is hidden. Somehow Rhyllann finds himself fleeing from a ruthless gang and DI Crombie, over the wild moors of Bodmin and in more danger than he could ever imagine.

I picked those two up, too -- I'd heard about the Appalachian trail one and had been wanting to look at it.

Here are the links:
Skywalker--Close Encounters on the Appalachian trail
and
Skywalker--Highs and Lows on the Pacific Crest Trail

Here's the first half of the product description for the Appalachian Trail one:
Why would a middle-aged businessman who had never even spent the night outdoors, attempt to hike the entire Appalachian Trail? Bill Walker, a former commodities trader in Chicago and London, and an avid walker, had developed a virtual obsession to hike this historic 2,175 mile footpath in one hiking season.
So in the spring of 2005 he set off from his home state of Georgia, hoping to make it to Mount Katahdin in northern Maine before the arrival of winter. Immediately, he realized he had plunged into a whole new world. For starters, the Appalachian Trail has some ferociously difficult terrain, winding through dramatically diverse geography and covering the East's highest peaks.

Walker's 6'11' height earned him the trail name, "Skywalker", and drew envious attention from his fellow hikers. However, the height made him more susceptible to weight loss, cold weather, and crushing fatigue. An elemental fear of bears and snakes, as well as getting lost, also loomed large.

Looking for history books I found this, which is easily missed among the huge list of freebies, thought some might like to know about it:

The Battle of Massard Prairie, Arkansas: The 1864 Confederate Attacks on Fort Smith

"On July 27, 1864, Brigadier General Richard M. Gano carried out one of the great open field cavalry attacks of the Civil War. Targeting the camp of the 6th Kansas Cavalry, Southern horsemen charged across miles of open prairie and achieved one of the few overwhelming Confederate victories of the Civil War in Arkansas. On Massard Prairie outside Fort Smith, Gano's Texans fought side by side with Choctaw and Chickasaw soldiers to virtually destroy an entire battalion of Union cavalry in a sweeping victory that opened the way for the noted Cabin Creek expedition just two weeks later. The Battle of Massard Prairie, Arkansas, is the third in a series of studies of small but significant Civil War battles by historian Dale Cox. Other books include The Battle of Marianna, Florida and The Battle of Natural Bridge, Florida. "
